Thirteen Reasons Why Customer Reviews5 out of 5 stars 2010-07-27By Victor This book was a quick read and definitely worth it. The pace is fast and you don't want to stop reading until you've finished the entire book. 5 out of 5 stars 2010-07-24 By Madison I sat down to read this, and I didn't stop until I finished. It was ABSOLUTELY EXTRAORDINARY! I've never felt as connected to characters in a book like I do to the characters in this book. I would HIGHLY recommend it. :) And I hope the author writes more books because I will definitely read those! :) This book deserves 6 out of 5 stars -- yes, as in an EXTRA star. :) 5 out of 5 stars 2010-07-15 By Madeline My friend practically begged me to read this novel. Although it took a few pages, soon I was completely hooked. It grabbed me in such a powerful way. Halfway through, I was carrying it everywhere, determined to learn more about Hannah Baker and her suicide. In a way, the reader becomes Clay Jensen. My emotions became entwined with his, as we slowly watched the downfall of this lovely human being. This book is not for the light of heart - it's raw and honest. There is no overwhelmingly happy ending, or catharsis. Thirteen Reasons Why should be required reading, at least for middle schoolers. This novel is important. It reflects what happens when people slip through the cracks of society. In my high school, a couple students committed suicide over the four years I attended. This novel made me realize how much I wish I could have helped, how much I didn't know. The idea of others coming across this realization from reading this novel expresses how much others should give it a try. Hannah Bakers's experiences are conveyed in such a stunning and heartbreaking method, it's impossible not to relate, or feel for her as she steadily records the ways her life began to disintegrate. And how nobody did anything to stop the downfall. Entertaining, gripping, and extremely painful, this book makes for the perfect emotional read. You won't be disappointed. 5 out of 5 stars 2010-07-14 By Nelaine Sanchez (Miami, FL USA) Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a package with his name on it lying on his porch. Happily he tears into the package only to find that inside are cassette tapes and a letter from Hannah Baker. The girl who he's crushed on since her arrival at his school. The same girl who committed suicide two weeks earlier. On these seven tapes, Hannah explains are the thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life and Clay is one of them. He has to promise to pass the tapes on to the next person in the list but before that he'll have to listen in order to find out how he made the list and just how responsible he was for a girl to feel that she had nowhere left to turn. Please don't ask me why I've waited to so long to read this book. I think it might have been that I was avoiding the dark subject matter. I'm not entirely sure, but I can tell you that I have had it sitting in my shelves since I purchased it when it first came out. From the moment that I cracked this book open I could not put it down. I immediately became captivated by the dual narrative of Clay and Hannah. Mr. Asher's storytelling was done in a way where I could easily switch over from Clay's thoughts to Hannah's voice, which you could almost hear - it was that clear, precise, young, sad. I'm not sure if everyone's book came in the same packaging as mine did, but I was able to pull the jacket off my hardcover and by flipping it over I had a copy of the map that Clay was using during the narrative. I literally became obsessed with this book. I had to know what would cause a young woman to take her life. How a boy like Clay was somehow connected and even one of the reasons that caused the "snowball effect" that led her to end her life so abruptly. I was on an emotional roller coaster - I was going through the up's and down's of Hannah's life, through Clay's anger, frustration, doubt. I found myself wondering at how we can take people for granted, sometimes act or speak without thinking and how these same thoughtless actions can affect another person. It was very thought-provoking, to say the least. Mr. Asher did a phenomenal job of capturing the pressures, challenges and pitfalls today's kids face. There is no humor in these pages. It is sad and heartbreaking but one that will stay with me for a long time. There aren't words to describe how I feel for this book. All I can say is, if you own it, read it, if you don't, buy it or check out from your library, you will not be disappointed. 5 out of 5 stars 2010-07-08 By StilettoSweetie This is probably one of my favorite books I have ever read, maybe even my favorite. You cannot put this book down! I read this book in one day!!! I felt like Clay, I needed to know what this girl had been put through to make her make such a horrible and irreversible decision. This book takes you on a journey through many different emotions. Frustrated that someone so young could end their life, irritated how immature people are in high school. Mad at how inconsiderate and ruthless people can be. Angry at the fact that people can know something is happening but are too scared to try and help, too afraid at what people will think. Then at last you feel sad, almost depressed as you watch her try one last final try to reach out to someone for help. No one looked deep enough to find the true root of the problem. No one thought it was a big deal. NO one realized what she had went through. This book showed me how on elittle rumor can set up events that can ruin one person's life and make them feel they need to take such a drastic measure to try and fix it. I don't know about any of you but I know after reading this book I will treat people different, I will try to be more caring and try to see past the outside and see deeper inside people to see the good. Maybe even deep enough like people should have looked inside Hannah to realize she needed help. I know that this is not a true story, but the fact is that situations like this happen everyday. I know that this book changed the way I view people. I feel that if every high schooler had to read this book it may help fix the way they treat eachother. I know that it will never stop, but if we could improve it even a little bit it might save peoples lives. Don't start rumors it may seem harmless but after reading this book you will see that it does not stop there. Like Hannah said you cannot disprove a rumor. I look forward to more books from Jay Asher. This one is amazing! I hope that this book can be turned into a movie someday, it really needs to. Well this book is amazing you should read it. I know that this won't be the last time I read this book. I will pick it up again in the near future so that I may learn from Hannah's life. Thank you.
