The green laser is easily visible in day light and shows up well on light-absorbing screens such as projections and televisions. In low light, you can see a faint trace of the beam as it reaches its target. At night, you can easily see the same green beam down from a block or farther away. Incredibly powerful, I was even able to use it as a flash light, because the beam itself provides a bright ambient green lighting when dark. For all the power, it has decent battery life too. It can fit in a shirt pocket or pants pocket, but is a few inches longer than the average pen or pencil size, and heavy for its size, so keep that in mind. Not powerful enough to melt snow or heat a surface, but it can definitely be a danger to the eyes, so keep out of the reach of children. 4 out of 5 stars 2010-07-24 By J. A. I was quite disappointed though when I opened the boxed and loaded the included AAA batteries into the laser and didn't get any light. I flipped the batteries around and then only received a weak flicker. My wife laughed and thought I'd been ripped off, and I was getting a bit nervous myself. However, I retrieved a pair of fresh Enegizer batteries and the laser lit up wonderfully. So be prepared to have a good set of batteries even though this unit is shipped with a pair. The ones included are useless (at least in my case, thus only four stars instead of five). I purchased the unit primarily to be used to point out objects in the night sky. In the last few days since I received it the moon has been too bright in the sky for any good views of the sky, but the laser is still bright enough to throw a visible beam into the bright moonlight sky. I trust that once the moon wanes enough to give me a truly dark sky this laser is really going to shine! I haven't had it long enough to rate it on its durability; but for the price it would be worth buying four or five to have a few spares lying around instead of pay or more for an expensive name brand laser. This summer I had the privilege of discovering a Ruby-throated Hummingbird nest in one of our local state parks. The problem was it was positioned about 40 feet up in a tree. My fellow birders were very interested in seeing the nest for themselves - but it was almost impossible to guide them to its location even with binoculars. After reading reviews and considering pricing, I decided to purchase this laser pen for the sole purpose of being able to use it to guide others' eyes to the nest's location. It worked very well for this purpose, even at mid-day, allowing me to be able to "point" to the branch that held the nest, giving observers an easy means of spotting it for themselves.
